The Beloved Jersey Tomato

Every summer in New Jersey we count down to mid-July when the famous Ramapo Tomato is at its ripened perfection.

It's the flavor of childhood: the taste recognizable in Campbell soups and Heinz ketchup.

Whether you're hankering for a slab of tomato with mayo on a hunk of bread, sliced tomatoes and mozzarella with a simple balsamic drizzle, or in the mood for something a little fancier, here is some inspiration for how to use this year's harvest from Kristen Miglore of Food52:

Some local resources:

- Seaside Cheese Co, Park Blvd: Fresh Italian mozzarella and burrata

- Cape May Olive Oil Co, Carpenter's La: Dress it up with local flavor

Farm Markets:

- West Cape May Farmer's Market, Tuesdays: Broadway

- Duckie's, Daily: Broadway

- Legates, Daily: Bayshore Rd

- Marlboro Farm, Daily: Rte 47

- Rea's, Daily: Stevens St
